Long time no see buddy!

It's good to hear from you again, and I like this song you have here. It is really calm and moving. The flow is perfect, slowly carrying you along for the ride. The way you keep everything entertaining, constantly moving the piece is well done and it invokes such a presence with the listener. It's great to hear from you again Openlight!

OpenLight responds:

It's great hearing from you again too! I'm trying to make something that's not as slow soon, but we'll see if I can get anything off the ground.

I already gave a huge review in regards to the 10 minute piece very similar to this. Both are great compositions, but I'm going to keep this review short!

First of all I hope your play went well, as these pieces show a great bit of quality, and I quite love them. Funny thing is that I like the way this short piece ended far more then that long introductory piece!

Anyways. Great work Zip. I look forward to more!

This really emulates that mysterious investigation like feel. I like it. The break into the part at 1:57 is quite nice! And that part is a nice touch. I like the instrument choice at 2:30. Nice introduction to a new part at 2:47. I'd keep going but I don't think I need to continue filling this review with "I like...". There is a slight repetitiveness around 4 minutes in, but that might just be due to the length of the song. Overall I like how you keep the listener interested almost throughout the entire song. oooh I love the piano at 6:41 and it gets even better at 7:06! Nice trick of bringing the main melody back at 7:30. And the fast pace later really adds a huge sense of depth... It's like you were trying to tell the entire story of the play in a musical piece before the play started... However I wouldn't know if that were the case as I don't know the story of the play, aside from the bit you put in your comments.

I didn't like the ending as much as I would have liked, but still. This is a fantastic piece. Great work Zip!

This is a good tune to listen to. I'm glad you remixed it. :P
Good work as always Teo!

I can't think of anything to really critique you on except maybe the ending, and in my personal opinion this is a really good remix. If anything, I don't really like the ending, and would have preferred something along the lines of a fade out or something like that, but that's just my personal opinion. Overall it is a good remix.

TastyTeo responds:

Yeah personally i liked that kind of ending that's a kind of taste :P thanks for the review buddy!

Again a great piece. I find it quite hard to critique you Step. You make amazing pieces, and most of my points come from my personal opinion, in which it is very hard to find anything that I dislike in your song. However there is one thing that I definitely noticed. You don't make loops very often do you?

When you export your song as an MP3 there should be an option to wrap the ending which "Should" take your lasting effects at the end of the piece and wrap it into the beginning of the piece. I use this for loops all the time, and in this piece, I feel it is quite necessary so you don't get that distinct cut off. Either way, I think you should play with that ending bit just a bit and see if you can't get it to play out that way, as that would make a huge difference in the quality of the loop!

Overall this is a fantastic piece and I am not going to let that looping bit muddy your score. 5 out of 5 Step. You deserve it as this is a great piece of music!

Step responds:

Wow, thanks for yet another review!

Really makes my day getting comments like "you make amazing pieces". Means a lot!

Yes I don't make loops often HOW'D you guess.

I actually intended to wrap the ending, I can't believe I forgot. Thanks for reminding me, I'll hop to it tomorrow.

Thanks again!

I like this version of the tune far more then the one previous! 0:30 is a bit wierd as it just didn't seem to fit the style I see the tune being in... I have to say though. I love the main tune at this piece..

I noticed you tend to muddy your pieces with multiple parts.. I know this isn't on purpose... but some sounds added over other sounds will create a muffled effect. To combat this just listen to your tune for out of place velocities, and adjust accordingly.

For this song, everything seems quite alright... but in all honesty I would have much preferred the main song and less drum and bass. Overall still quite good. I love the pace of the melody line in this piece.

Well I am enjoying the feel of this piece quite well. At 0:33 everything kinda became muddied together, and I think you could work on your note velocities around there. The out of tune part at 1:19 is more annoying and in my opinion doesn't add much to the song.

Overall though I still like this song, and it loops quite well.

ThePal responds:

I don't know if I agree with you at the 0:33 part, and what are you getting at, the drums here or the sine rhythm? And if it would be anything, I'd believe it would be a mastering problem.

And at the 1:19. That's just up to the part where the lead from "A Handy Lass" comes up, do you mean the bell, or the lead?

Just send me an PM with your reply, please. :)

Though, Thanks alot for coming with a thoughtful review!

Okay... I love the use of the piano in this piece. The bass line is quite fluid... And the feel of the piece is jumpy and quite active. My biggest critique I can give you right now would be that it is quite easy to tell this is midi... There are no apparent fluctuations in the volume of the notes... When it comes to piano that would be key.. Notes you want to stick out more are generally at a higher volume, while as you will also follow a flow in which the volume of the notes follow the pitch. Lower pitch being lower in volume, and higher being higher in volume. These are very minuscule changes, but they make a remarkable difference in the depth and feel of your song. The song's structure was built quite well, although I am not to fond of the way you ended it. I hope that this review was helpful, and keep up the good work Blacklawn!

Blacklawn responds:

Thanks for reviewing. I did put velocity changes but it seems like people aren't noticing them much. I could remake the song to make these changes more apparent. As for the ending... Do you think it was too abrupt? It felt adequate to me.

A real catchy melody line you have going on here.. however slight repetitive it may be, I still find it entrancing. Nice use of a break at 3:09. I'm slightly disappointed at how much of this song is repetition of that entrancing melody, however the song is still quite good. You should probably work on the ending of the song a bit, as it just cuts off, and IMO, that is very meh... it ruins the quality of the piece.

Anyways, overall I would give this a 4.5/5 stars... Still a fantastic piece Aztech!

Kreyowitz responds:

Yeah, that was an error on the export at the end there, i'll have to go back and fix that if possible, if I still have the files that is. Anyways, glad you could still enjoy it, and good to hear from you!

Fantastic ambient feel.... 0:48 kinda freaked me out lol
I love the transition into 1:00, and the melody after that is simply amazing!
I do wish it was longer though, you got that rush going on 2 minutes in and puff.... gone.

Anyways, Fantastic Piece. I enjoyed every second of it!

Step responds:

Hahaha, that diminished chord at the beginning. Yup it's creepy!

I'm glad you liked the transition. Quite a weird one, that transition. It's basically a "stop previous section, start new section" transition, but I somehow feel it works, especially thematically.

It isn't very long, I agree. But I need to prioritise - I don't have a lot of time nowadays and this is for a game with fairly short levels, so I either spend too much time making a long track and not finish all of the rest, or dish out the right amount of tracks, even if they're a bit short. I felt that I at least developed the track enough for it to justify its length though.

Thank you for reviewing :3. Got to hate it when my response is larger than the review haha.

I am creative and love to draw, cartoon, write music, animate... I believe that with enough work Newgrounds will come to see that I have what it takes to be what I believe I can be. Thank You Newgrounds.
